Blue Cross Animal Hospital Introduce
Blue Cross Animal Hospital, located on East Broadway, stands as one of the most long-standing veterinary institutions in the Louisville, Kentucky area. With a history that dates back nearly a century, the hospital provides comprehensive, full-service veterinary care for both dogs and cats. Its mission is centered on combining modern medical advancements with a personal, compassionate touch, treating every pet as a valued member of the family. The practice has a legacy of excellence, rooted in the Louisville community, having served generations of Kentucky pet owners.
The hospital is known for offering advanced diagnostic tools often found only in specialty centers, including on-site CT and Ultrasound capabilities. This allows for prompt and accurate diagnoses for complex or aging pet health issues, such as those involving internal medicine, neurological conditions, or chronic diseases. The practice's team includes veterinarians with advanced specialty training, such as board certification in Emergency and Critical Care and Internal Medicine, bringing a higher level of medical expertise to the local community. While clients seek out this expertise, the experiences can vary, with some praising the high-level medical care and the effort to accommodate urgent needs, while others note significant issues with appointment wait times and communication with referring veterinarians, particularly in highly complex, multi-system cases.
The Blue Cross Animal Hospital is centrally located in Louisville, making it a highly accessible option for residents across the metropolitan area and for those traveling from surrounding Kentucky counties seeking specialized care.
- Address: 827 E Broadway, Louisville, KY 40204, USA
The hospital recognizes that a stressful parking situation can add to the anxiety of a sick pet visit, and has taken steps to ensure convenience:
- Parking: Free parking lot, Free street parking, and On-site parking are available, offering several easy options for clients upon arrival.
- Accessibility: The facility offers a Wheelchair accessible parking lot and a Wheelchair accessible restroom, ensuring the clinic is accommodating for all clients.
- Amenities: A clean Restroom is available for client use.
- Planning: Appointment required. While the hospital aims to accommodate same day appointments for urgent care needs, all visits require pre-scheduling. Wait times, particularly for complex specialist consults, may be significant, and clients should plan for potential delays past their scheduled appointment time.
Blue Cross Animal Hospital functions as a full-service veterinarian and animal hospital, providing a comprehensive range of care from routine wellness to advanced specialty diagnostics and treatment for cats and dogs.
- Advanced Diagnostic Imaging: Offers state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging including on-site CT (Computed Tomography) scans, Ultrasound, and Digital X-ray for non-invasive internal examination.
- Specialty and Internal Medicine: Dedicated Internal Medicine consultations are available for managing complex, chronic, or multi-systemic diseases such as kidney disease, diabetes, and endocrine disorders.
- General Veterinary Practice: Includes routine Wellness Exams, Vaccinations, and Parasite Control for both Cats and Dogs.
- Surgical Services: Provides a range of surgical procedures, supported by advanced monitoring equipment.
- Dental Care: Comprehensive dental services are available to maintain the oral health of pets.
- Urgent and Same-Day Care: The hospital often accommodates Same day appointments for urgent or acutely ill patients.
- Pharmacy and Nutrition: Maintains a fully stocked on-site Pharmacy and provides expert Dietary Consultations and nutritional guidance.
- Additional Services: Includes Microchipping and pet Boarding (which may refer to hospitalization or overnight stay) services.
The hospital’s primary appeal to the Kentucky pet-owning community lies in its blend of advanced technology and deep experience, although users should be aware of reported issues in communication and timeliness.
- High-Tech Diagnostic Capabilities: The presence of on-site CT scanning and advanced Ultrasound distinguishes the hospital from many general practices, enabling rapid, high-resolution diagnosis of complex or critical conditions.
- Specialized Internal Medicine: The practice provides access to an Internal Medicine specialist, such as one with dual board certifications in Emergency/Critical Care and Internal Medicine, which is crucial for managing complicated illnesses like strokes, seizures, kidney disease, and diabetic conditions.
- Legacy and Experience: Operating since 1930, the hospital has a profound history and deep roots in the Louisville community, reflecting nearly a century of commitment to local pet health.
- Full-Service Care for Cats and Dogs: The facility is equipped to handle a comprehensive range of care for both Dogs and Cats, from wellness checks to advanced surgical interventions.
- Same-Day Appointment Option: The effort to provide Same day appointments is a major benefit for pet owners facing immediate health concerns, allowing for prompt attention outside of emergency hospital hours.

Blue Cross Animal Hospital is worth choosing, particularly for Kentucky pet owners whose dogs or cats require advanced diagnostic services or internal medicine specialization. The primary value proposition of this hospital is its ability to offer high-level care and diagnostic tools—like CT and Ultrasound—in a non-referral setting, which can be essential for efficiently managing critically or chronically ill pets. This level of on-site capability minimizes the need for extra travel and wait times for imaging outside the hospital.
However, potential clients should proceed with a realistic understanding of the practice's operations. The hospital has a documented history of significant wait times, sometimes exceeding an hour beyond the scheduled appointment, and critical lapses in communication between the specialist and the client's regular veterinary team. While the expertise of the Internal Medicine staff is highly valued by clients who have seen positive results, the recurring difficulty with follow-through on medication calls, test instructions, and referral letters suggests that clients must be proactive and persistent in advocating for collaborative care. For pet owners needing cutting-edge diagnostic technology and internal medicine expertise, this hospital offers the medical capacity, but those with complex, multi-vet care teams should be prepared to manage the communication aspects diligently to ensure seamless continuity of care for their beloved companions.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I'm not one to leave reviews; however, I hope my story, while lengthy, will help others with making a more informed choice when deciding to take their ill or aging pet to Blue Cross Animal Hospital. My dog her was referred to Dr. Campbell after an MRI determined she had several strokes along with stage two kidney disease as well as a history of seizures. Our local vet (whom I have great admiration for) also gave him a glowing review as they were former classmates. We were referred to Dr. Campbell by our local vet to review her current medications to ensure they weren't interacting in a negative way. I immediately made an appointment, which the earliest appointment available was two weeks out, and drove an hour and a half one way to seek better care for her.We arrived for our July 8, 2025 appointment and sat in the lobby for an hour after our scheduled appointment time before we were brought into a small interior room with sliding doors where we waited another hour. When Dr. Campbell entered the room, he was very apologetic about the delay. We were able to ask him questions, and he provided answers and explanations as to how to tackle her care in conjunction with her regular vet and neurologist. We were explicitly told by Dr. Campbell that they would work together as a team. When we left his office, we had a list of new medications as well as instructions to follow up on her creatinine level a week later with her regular vet. Dr. Campbell instructed us that we would receive an email with the referral letter and additional instructions that evening. This referral letter and additional instructions never came.Less than a few days later, she suffered a small breakthrough seizure. We immediately notified her neurologist, who wanted to add an additional seizure medicine on top of the two that she was already on. I called and left a message for Dr. Campbell about adding it to make sure it wouldn’t interact with her other new medications. It took two weeks to receive a generic email from a vet tech in his practice about adding the medication.During this time, we followed up with our regular vet on her creatinine level and blood pressure as instructed. During our regular vet appointment, our vet told us that she had been trying to reach him each day for almost two weeks herself. Dr. Campbell never followed through on communicating with her about the changes to her medication and testing. Toward the end of her life, our vet told us that she had to call his clinic and wait for 30 minutes to an hour to speak to him. It was also apparent by this point that he neglected to read her emails or return her phone calls. After our regular vet was finally able to speak with Dr. Campbell, I received a direct phone call from him on July 28, 2025. He was apologetic and gave an excuse that her folder was sitting on someone else's desk. In the conversation, he stated, “You want answers... well, let's see... she is very sick. She has seizures, she has strokes, kidney disease, and gastroenteritis." His tone of voice was no longer kind and hopeful; it became cruel and sarcastic. At the end of our conversation, he promised by 6 p.m. that day that two prescriptions would be called in to our local pharmacy, he would send a referral letter, as well as recipes for food, and follow up with our regular vet on the bloodwork tests her needed. We immediately scheduled an appointment with our regular vet for the requested bloodwork. While we were in her office, the office staff mentioned that Dr. Campbell never sent over what type of bloodwork or tests he wanted performed. During this appointment, you could see the frustration on my regular vet’s face. She stated that with older dogs, a lot can change in 24-48 hours. Dr. Campbell never followed through with the prescriptions, sent over the testing instructions he promised, or sent the referral letter. We had to make the tough decision to let her go on July 31, 2025.Dr. Campbell truly failed her by constantly making excuses and refusing to communicate with the other vets on the team.
August 09 · Kelly TBack when I was seeing Dr Campbell directly, I had the experience I was looking for from a veterinarian. The last two times I’ve gone, my animals have been seen by Dr Baca. Both times I’ve waited *over* an hour past my scheduled appointment time to be seen. I find Dr Baca to communicate in a rather condescending manner, and appear far too timid around reactive dogs. This has been a secondary office I’ve used when availability has been limited at my dog’s regular Vet- there’s most certainly no way I will be scheduling here again.
August 04 · Kathleen SpaldingSo thankful for this place. My dog was bitten by another dog. I called this place in an emergency and they said they'd take me in for an appointment right away - got in within an hour on a weekday morning. In the midst of all of the adrenaline and scrapes from having to push the other dog off my dog, I was overwhelmed. My dog was shaking from shock and bleeding at the neck - I thought he was going to die. Dr. Dawson did a great job at stapling my dog's incisions. So grateful that they saw me on such short notice! This was just a little over a year ago, and I still think about how lucky I was that they took us in.I was worried about having to pay thousands that I didn't have, but they were able to get his stitches, treatment and meds for a veryy reasonable cost (that being said, my dog didn't need anesthesia as 1) he was so shaken up and 2) he's a pretty docile, quiet dog). My baby still has some discoloration on his fur, but I'm glad that he's still alive.
May 12 · Uria ParkMet with Dr. Campbell and his staff today for my english bulldog Sammy. Sammy has lymphoma cancer, Dr. Campbell got right on top of things, put together a plan-of-action, and started treating Sammy right away. Dr. Campbell and his staff took their time, they didn't rush me, and they answered all my questions. I'm so glad I came here, Dr. Campbell is VERY smart, he and his staff made me feel a lot better about the situation when I left. I'm so glad my friend and veterinarian referred me here, I HIGHLY recommend Blue Cross Animal Hospital. Thank you Dr. Campbell for helping my baby.
