Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic Introduce
For residents across Arizona who share their homes with non-traditional pets—including rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, parrots, lizards, and other exotic companions—finding specialized veterinary care is a necessity, not a luxury. The Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic, located in Mesa, stands out as a critical resource, providing an exceptional and exclusive focus on the unique medical and surgical needs of exotic animals. As one of the first and oldest exotic pet exclusive practices in Arizona, this clinic has dedicated its nearly three decades of service to becoming a beacon of specialized knowledge and compassionate care for pets often overlooked by general veterinary hospitals.
The unique physiology of exotic animals means that veterinary care must be tailored and highly specific. At the Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic, the professional team—comprised of skilled veterinarians and supportive staff—is deeply committed to staying current on the latest advancements in exotic animal medicine. They do not treat these animals like small dogs or cats; instead, they apply species-specific knowledge to ensure correct diagnoses, effective treatments, and optimal preventative care. From the fragility of a small guinea pig to the complex needs of an avian patient, their approach is comprehensive, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and specialized surgical techniques tailored for smaller, non-traditional companions.
Client testimonials consistently highlight the profound level of compassion shown by the staff, particularly during the hardest times. The emotional support provided during difficult moments—such as having to say goodbye to a beloved pet—is often described as "incredibly caring, thoughtful, and informative." One pet owner, whose sweet bunny, Tyrone, was kept alive and pain-free for nearly a year after a cancer diagnosis, praised the staff's kindness and understanding during a subsequent emergency with their last bunny, Chompie. The team's dedication goes beyond clinical treatment, extending to thoughtful gestures like creating a beautiful cremation box and hand-drawn card, providing immense comfort to heartbroken families. This combination of highly technical, specialized care and extraordinary empathy is what truly defines the Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic experience for Arizona pet owners.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We had to unexpectedly say goodbye to our beloved guinea pig. The staff was so incredibly caring, thoughtful and informative. I wish there had been a different outcome, but they definitely helped ease the pain. We got a beautiful cremation box and one of the staff members drew an amazing picture of our little baby on a card signed by the staff. They could tell we were heartbroken, and how much he was loved. I would highly recommend this location over and over again.
October 07 · Jennifer SmeeThere is no kinder staff to be found. Anywhere. 🩷 They helped keep our sweet bunny, Tyrone, alive and pain-free for almost a year after his cancer diagnosis. Then, just yesterday, they allowed us to come in to the office on an emergency basis to address the all-of-a-sudden failing health of our last little bunny--Chompie.We had to send Chompie to Heaven to be with Tyrone, and it nearly broke us to do it, but the doctor and staff were so incredibly kind, understanding, and loving that it helped us do the hardest thing. We are forever grateful to them for helping us care for our bun buns. Thank you so much. 🩷🐇🐇
October 09 · J AFirst of all, I want to sincerely thank the reception staff, Dr. Chen, and the vet tech team for taking such great care of both my rabbit, Sugar, and myself.I had previously been going to AZ Exotic, but unfortunately I often felt like they were just running game. Since there aren’t many exotic vets in the East Valley, I thought I didn’t have much of a choice. When Sugar injured her leg, I was stressed and desperate for help. AZ Exotic couldn’t see me until several hours after they opened, so I called Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic instead. They answered the phone right away, quickly got some basic information, and gave me an ETA for my arrival. When I arrived just 15 minutes later, they immediately took Sugar into the back to stabilize her while I filled out some paperwork. During that time, I even got to meet Sashi, their rose-breasted cockatoo, which was such a neat distraction and really helped calm my nerves. What stood out to me the most is that I never once felt like I was being taken advantage of emotionally, which is how I’ve often felt at other clinics. At Avian & Exotic, I truly felt that their priority was my rabbit’s well-being, not just running up a bill. That meant the world to me.Fortunately, Sugar hadn’t broken anything. She was given pain management medication, and during her evaluation the team also discovered some dermatitis under her chin I would have never noticed. They prescribed antibiotics for it and even clipped her nails for me. They even sent me her X-Rays that I had asked for so I can take a look at them on my own. The level of care and attention to detail was outstanding, and I’m so happy to say Sugar is back to her normal self now. I look forward to our follow up visit in a few weeks!
August 29 · Devan RichardsonSuperior Care, Knowledge, and Experience. Dr. Chen and Dr. MacFarland are terrific veterinarians. All members of their team help assist you on understanding what is best for the care and well being of your pet. They always go above and beyond in explaining medical procedures, possibilities of treatments, and breaking down any paperwork. Adored Emma, and appreciated her taking time to break all our paperwork down for us too! They are the only Avian Specialist I would recommend. 🦜💚
August 18 · Sophia LizarragaI’m so glad I went here. They took care of my little hedgies surgery the day I called. All the staff were extremely professional and wanted as much information as possible on my little girl. (Other places just wanted me to put the deposit down and get in asap) The prices were absolutely exceptional for getting an eye removal surgery. I can’t thank them enough. My little girl is so happy now. I feel extremely relieved knowing Dr Diggers and his staff took amazing care of my girl. So glad I put my trust in them ❤️Thank you all. Much love.
