Bluegrass Veterinary Vision Introduce
When your beloved pet, whether a cherished canine, feline companion, or even an equine or exotic animal, faces a complex eye health issue, you need more than just general veterinary care—you need a specialist. Bluegrass Veterinary Vision, located in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky, serves as the premier referral center for advanced Veterinary Ophthalmology across the greater Louisville and Southern Indiana regions. They are committed to improving and preserving the vision and comfort of animals through highly specialized medical and surgical eye care.
The clinic is led by Dr. Erica Tolar, DACVO, a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist. This distinction means Dr. Tolar has undergone extensive additional training and certification focused entirely on the diagnosis and treatment of all animal eye conditions. For Kentucky pet owners, this translates into access to the highest level of expertise for complex, chronic, or sight-threatening eye diseases. The entire team at Bluegrass Veterinary Vision operates with the medical expertise, great care, and compassion noted by grateful clients, focusing on restoring health and quality of life for animals with vision-related challenges. They serve as an essential extension of your primary care veterinarian, working collaboratively to ensure the best possible outcome for your pet.
Specializing in eye care for animals ranging from small pets to large farm animals, including dogs, cats, horses, birds, and exotics, the clinic is uniquely positioned to handle a wide variety of ophthalmic cases. Given that they are the only board-certified ophthalmology clinic in the Louisville area, they often accommodate emergency appointments, demonstrating their commitment to the region's pets that desperately need their specialized care.
New clients should be aware that appointments are highly recommended due to the specialized nature of the practice. To ensure every patient receives an accurate diagnosis, a complete ophthalmic examination is conducted on all new patients, even if some initial tests were performed by the referring veterinarian. This meticulous approach includes necessary diagnostic steps like the Schirmer Tear Test, intraocular pressure measurement, and Fluorescein Staining, which are crucial for developing an appropriate treatment plan.
Bluegrass Veterinary Vision is conveniently located in eastern Louisville, making it an accessible veterinary specialty destination for pet owners throughout Kentucky.
The clinic’s address is:
Address: 500 N English Station Rd Suite 111, Louisville, KY 40223, USA.
The facility ensures a comfortable and accommodating experience for all visitors, especially those who may be arriving with an anxious or recently-operated-on pet. The location offers excellent accessibility features, including:
- Wheelchair accessible entrance
- Wheelchair accessible parking lot
- Wheelchair accessible restroom

Given the frequent need to accommodate emergency appointments, the team highly recommends booking in advance. Clients visiting for the first time or those whose pets require special handling, such as those who may show fear or aggression, are asked to be prepared for necessary safety measures, like muzzling, to ensure a safe and thorough examination can be completed by the team. Drop-off appointments may also be an option, depending on the pet's condition and the daily schedule.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Dr Tolar and staff are wonderful. My little Sophie girl (dog) had a complicated case with her eyes and other health issues. Plus- she has a very worried mom (me) that overthinks everything. They took care of her and me with empathy and professionalism. Sophie unfortunately did end up having to get an eye removed and Dr Tolar did a great job and the staff kept in full contact with me during the entire day. I highly recommend them!
September 30 · Brooke ReedHighly recommend this team! They not only hold the medical expertise we needed, but are obvious animal lovers and showed great care and compassion. We're grateful for their skills to restore health to our dog's eyesight! He's like a new dog!
June 17 · Stacy HammondDr. Tolar gave our baby Maggie her quality of life back! Our baby is almost 15 now and has had issues with so many things her entire life with allergies, arthritis, losing her hearing and cataracts on her eyes. When she developed glaucoma on her right eye and we realized she would lose that eye, we thought that might end up taking her from us. Not only did Bluegrass perform a very successful surgery and removed the eye, they helped us find a misdiagnosis of congestive heart failure and get Miss Maggie off a bunch of meds our “regular” vet had her on! After the surgery Maggie is more energetic and happy than she has been in a couple of years! We thought she had went completely blind but turns out she can still see a fair bit out of her left eye. The right eye was causing so much pain I think it was giving her double vision. If you think losing an eye is the “worst thing” ever, don’t. It gave our baby back to us!
September 19 · Darren ClemonsThe Vet and staff are amazing. I spent months being my dog's guide as his eyes had corneal ulcers in them & couldn't see. & The Vet here fixed them.My local vet misdiagnosed my dog's eye problem & said he didn't have ulcers (he never tested his eyes). Meanwhile my dog was losing his sight not able to open his eyes, and they were getting worse. Antibiotics weren't working. I was so scared & so was my dog. My dog was getting more & more depressed. But I was determined that he had ulcers in his eyes & needed a 2nd opinion..I brought my dog to Bluegrass Veterinary Vision, & they confirmed with tests he did indeed have ulcers. He went through 2 procedures and is able to see as normal. He's on a forever eye drop to prevent ulcers from coming back, but I'm so Friggen relieved he can see and enjoy his life. It has made me so happy he got his sight back after months of stress.Thank you all so so much!!!
February 05 · M BVery happy with the vet and her staff. They explained everything so that I understood. Was awesome with my furbabies anxiety. Just a consult but I have scheduled Max's surgery. UPDATE- Max's surgery went great. They were amazing with him. His last follow up visit was today and everything was good. You can't even tell that a big mole was removed off his eyelid. Definitely recommend Bluegrass!!!!
